How this auto loan estimate works

The calculator starts with the vehicle cost, subtracts your down payment and net trade equity, and adds sales tax and one-time costs when you choose to finance them. Net trade equity is the trade-in value minus the outstanding trade-in loan.

What financing tax and fees changes

Rolling tax and fees into the loan lowers cash due at signing but raises the amount financed, monthly payment, and total interest. The comparison above calculates both choices using the same APR and term.

What the total cost includes

The estimated total combines cash due at signing, net trade equity, all scheduled loan payments, and the entered insurance premium for every month of the loan. Insurance can change, so this is planning context rather than a forecast.

Calculation convention

Payments use a conventional fixed-rate installment-loan formula with monthly compounding. Interest is calculated on the opening balance each month; the remaining payment reduces principal. Displayed amounts are rounded, while calculations use unrounded values.

Auto loan questions

Does a trade-in always reduce sales tax?

No. Treatment varies by jurisdiction and transaction. Use the trade-in tax setting to match the rule you have verified locally.

What happens when I owe more than my trade-in is worth?

The difference is negative equity. This calculator adds it to the new amount financed and warns you because it increases borrowing and interest.

Is insurance part of the loan payment?

No. The calculator displays insurance beside the loan payment for monthly planning, but never finances it or presents it as part of the lender payment.
